Choosing Wedding Flowers

Firstly – Congratulations!

Wedding flowers are a key way to express your personal style and creativity on your big day. If I have learnt anything about ‘The Big Day’ flowers though, it is that hiring a florist early on in your planning stage is a game changer.

Florists are artists with flowers as their medium, so finding a florist that best suits you, your wishes and your budget is a great way to get the ball rolling on your design plans. Flowers can transform a space from plain and boring to beautifully magical – and that’s what we all want right? A magical wedding day!

As a starting point, researching some inspiration for your day is a big must do! Creating a mood board of the colours, varieties and style of flower arrangements that you like is a brilliant way to help find a florist that aligns with your vision. As mentioned before, florists are artists that will all have their own individual style so best find one that matches yours.

Budget is another key element in choosing wedding flowers that will impact the florals you have on your day. Figuring out what is important to you and how much of your budget you are wanting to spend on flowers is another good thing to have an idea of when choosing your florist. For you, a beautiful floral ceremony arch may be more important than having a live band, so allocating expenses according to what you value is important.

Furthermore, the varieties, venue and time of year will impact how much you spend on flowers too. Seasonal availability will factor into what varieties are possible for you to use, or if your heart is set on flowers that won’t be in season – you will have to pay more for them.

Installation costs for the day will also need to be noted down.

Now the exciting part! Colours! Choosing flowers to enhance your day’s colour palette can be one of the most fun parts. Whether you want to match or contrast, add some bold pops or simple neutrality, flowers of almost all shades are available and this is where you can really let your creative side come out! Maybe you opt for varying monochrome shades or complimentary colours that accentuate the bridesmaids dresses. There are so many options available to you for this, to the point it can be rather overwhelming so that initial research and talking with your florist for what you can come up with together will be critical – and fun!

The style and vibe of your day as a whole can help determine what types of flowers you opt for too. For example, if you are wanting a glamorous day; white orchids, a beachy wedding; daisies, a rustic feel; sunflowers and baby’s breath or a whimsical fairytale; peonies.

Another way to help create the atmosphere of the space and build into the experience of the wedding, is to use floral fragrance. Aromas can be used but it is important to ensure none of your wedding party is allergic to any of the flowers you choose! You don’t want them sneezing through the ‘I Do’s’!

Lastly, fragrance. While it’s not something that will be captured in photos, smell is our sense that is most strongly linked to memory. How incredible would it be to be transported back to your magical wedding day every time you stop to smell the roses?
